Nurse Practitioners

Katie Wilson joined our team as a Nurse Practitioner in December 2015.  She is based in the Treatment Room at the Surgery.  

The Nurse Practitioner can deal with the following:

  • Review & management of long term conditions which includes: Hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, diabetes, stroke/TIA, peripheral arterial disease, asthma, COPD, kidney disease, thyroid, dementia, vascular, rheumatoid arthritis, learning disbility, mental health etc
  • Palliative care
  • Care of the elderly
  • Health Promotion: smoking cessation, weight control, healthy lifestyle
  • Ear Care and syringing
  • Blood tests
  • Warfarin monitoring
  • ECGs
  • Cardiac Event Monitoring
  • Wounds, dressings and leg ulcers
  • Vaccinations
  • Removal of surgical material
  • Catheterisations
  • Spirometry
  • Can interpret Results
  • Can prescribe items within her sphere of knowledge and competence

Minor Ailments

  • Coughs, colds, chest infections, bronchitis
  • Hay Fever
  • Exacerbation of asthma
  • Fever
  • Stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation
  • Ear, nose and throat infections
  • Eye infections
  • Headache/Migraine

Genito-urinary problems

  • Urine infections
  • Thrush
  • Vaginal Discharge
  • Menstrual Problems
  • Contraception

Skin complaints

  • Eczema, dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Acne
  • Skin infections and fungal infections
  • Rashes
  • Nappy rash
  • Insect bites
  • Scabies and head lice
  • Allergic reactions

Treatment Room Injuries

  • Sprains & strains
  • Back Pain
  • Ankle and knee pain
  • Minor head injury
  • Hand injuries

This is a list of an example of some of the duties that may be undertaken by the nurse practitioner but it is not exhaustive as she may be involved in the care of patients with other clinical needs that have not been detailed above.  

 

Katie Wilson

Katie Wilson joined our team as a Nurse Practitioner in December 2015.  Katie was our District Nurse/Midwife and has subsequently worked as a Smoking Cessation Adviser, Cardiac Specialist Nurse & Macmillan Nurse.  She is also a qualified Nurse Prescriber and Family Health Nurse and is currently studying for an MSc.  She is highly qualified and experienced and is a very valuable member of our team.  She is based in the surgery and is available for appointments and home visiting if appropriate.  She works alongside the existing team of  doctors and office staff.
